What Are the Practical Use Volumes of our 96-Well Plates?

A 96-well plate labeled 1 mL or 2 mL does not always mean that is the exact working volume you should use. The nominal size tells you the well capacity, but the practical fill level depends on the plate design and how much headroom you need for reliable handling.

For a 2 mL deep-well plate, the practical use volume is typically 2.0 mL per well, with some plates physically holding more, up to about 2.4–2.5 mL total well volume. That gives you enough margin for pipetting, mixing, and automation.

For a 1 mL deep-well plate, the practical use volume is typically about 0.9 mL per well, leaving a little extra space for safer handling and reduced spill risk.

The key point is simple: nominal volume is not always the practical max volume. Knowing the right working volume helps improve sample handling, consistency, and workflow reliability.
